This text presents tutorial and reference documentation for several X Consortium standard extensions, conventions and utility libraries. Many of these are new in Release 6, or have been standardized since Release 6. This text aims to complete the documentation set of any X programmer.
This text presents tutorial and reference documentation for several X Consortium standard extensions and conventions and utility libraries. Many of these are new in Release 6, or have been standardized since Release 6. The author covers the session manager, interclient exchange (ICE), Xmu (miscellaneous utilities), and XPM (pixmap file) libraries, as well as ICCCM (interclient communication conventions) and XLFD (font naming) specifications. Also covered are the following extensions: shape (nonrectangular windows); input (nonstandard input devices like spaceballs); double-buffering (animation); synchronization (multimedia, games); X test (event simulation, demos); shared memory (imaging performance); record (capture events); and image (imaging).

Adrian Nye is the author or editor of several volumes in the X Window System Series from O'Reilly & Associates. Adrian has worked as a programmer writing educational software in C and as a mechanical engineer designing offshore oil spill cleanup equipment. He has interests in the environment and the impact of people and technology. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.
