Readers planning to work through this text should have a clear understanding of elementary complex analysis, of matrix algebra and of calculus, including ordinary differential equations. Basic concepts of engineering physics are assumed to be known as well.
The text is organized in a top-down way, along the following main points:
systems modeling; analysis of open-loop systems in the time and frequency domain;
analysis of closed-loop systems in the time and frequency domain; identification of unavoidable performance constraints; specification of the desired closed-loop system behavior; synthesis of feedback control systems; and implementation of control systems.
This course introduces all relevant steps of a control system design procedure. The price one must pay for such a breadth is the limitation of the discussion to relatively simple systems.
This text is organized in "lectures", which represent the amount of material that can be discussed in a typical two-hours class. Small exercises are included in the main text. The solutions to these "quick checks" can be found in the appendix.
Lino Guzzella was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1957. He received the diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1981 and the Dr. sc. techn. degree in control engineering in 1986 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. From 1987 to 1993 he held various positions in industry and academia. He then joined the mechanical engineering depart ment of ETH as a faculty member where he is currently a chaired professor for thermotronics. His research interests are modeling of dynamic systems, non linear and robust control and applications of these ideas to thermal and especially automotive systems. Among others, he received the IEEE Control Systems Magazine Outstanding Paper Award and the IEEE Industry Award for Excellence in Translational Control Research, the SAE Arch T. Colwell Merit Award and the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, the IMechE Thomas Hawksley Medal and the ImechE Crompton Lancaster Medal, and the Energy Globe Award. He is a fellow of IFAC and of IEEE and a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. A complete CV and a list of publications can be found at Antonio Sciarretta was born in Ortona, Italy, in 1970. He received the Laurea in Mechanical Engineering in 1995, and the Doctorate degree (Thermal machines) in 1999, both from the University of L'Aquila, Italy. He earned a Habilitation (Control Eng.) in 2009 from the Grenoble Institute of Technology, France.
