Geometric Modeling and Scientific Visualization are both established disciplines, each with their own series of workshops, conferences and journals. But clearly both disciplines overlap, which led to the idea of composing a book on Geometric Modeling for Scientific Visualization. The editors received 39 submissions of high-quality research and survey papers, from which the 27 strongest are published in this book. All papers underwent a strict refereeing process. Topics covered include: Surface Reconstruction and Interpolation; Surface Interrogation and Modeling; Wavelets and Compression on Surfaces; Topology, Distance Fields and Solid Modeling; and others.

I Surface Reconstruction and Interpolation.- Reconstruction from Unorganized Point Sets Using Gamma Shapes.- Isometric Embedding for a Discrete Metric.- Mesh-Independent Surface Interpolation.- Empirical Analysis of Surface Interpolation by Spatial Environment Graphs.- II Surface Interrogation and Modeling.- Smooth Polylines on Polygon Meshes.- Progressive Precision Surface Design.- Access to Surface Properties up to Order Two for Visualization Algorithms.- Modeling Rough Surfaces.- A Feature Based Method for Rigid Registration of Anatomical Surfaces.- III Wavelets and Compression on Surfaces.- Lifting Biorthogonal B-spline Wavelets.- Tree-based Data Structures for Triangle Mesh Connectivity Encoding.- Compression of Normal Meshes.- New Results in Signal Processing and Compression of Polygon Meshes.- IV Topology, Distance Fields, and Solid Modeling.- Adaptively Represented Complete Distance Fields of Polygonal Models.- Fully Dynamic Constrained Delaunay Triangulations.- EVM: A Complete Solid Model for Surface Rendering.- Topology Simplification of Symmetric, Second-Order 2D Tensor Fields.- Automating Transfer Function Design Based on Topology Analysis.- V Multiresolution Data Representation.- Simplicial-based Multiresolution Volume Datasets Management: An Overview.- Selective Refinement on Nested Tetrahedral Meshes.- Divisive Parallel Clustering for Multiresolution Analysis.- Hierarchical Large-scale Volume Representation with % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaagCart1ev2aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaWaaOqaaeaaca% aIYaaaleaacaaIZaaaaaaa!3788!$$sqrt[3]{2}$$Subdivision and Trivariate B-spline Wavelets.- Multiresolution Surface and Volume Representations.- VI Biomedical and Physical Applications.- Geometric Methods for Vessel Visualization and Quantification - A Survey.- An Application for Dealing with Missing Data in Medical Images, with Application to Left Ventricle SPECT Data.- Constraint-Based Astronometric Modeling Tools.- Geometric Modelling for Virtual Colon Unfolding.- Appendix: Color Plates.
