This reference book on Thermal Separation Technology is very useful for product development and industrial research as well as scientific research. Above all it is a reference for a deeper understanding of the procedural context in process engineering.

Thermal Separation Technology is a key discipline for many industries and lays the engineering foundations for the sustainable and economic production of high-quality materials. This book provides fundamental knowledge on this field and may be used both in university teaching and in industrial research and development. Furthermore, it is intended to support professional engineers in their daily efforts to improve plant efficiency and reliability. Previous German editions of this book have gained widespread recognition. This first English edition will now make its content available to the international community of students and professionals. In the first chapters of the book the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and multiphase flow are addressed. Further chapters examine in depth the different unit operations distillation and absorption, extraction, evaporation and condensation, crystallization, adsorption and chromatography, and drying, while the closing chapter provides valuable guidelines for a conceptual process development.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfons Mersmann has industrial background in chemical industry and was teaching process engineering at Technical University Munich for more than 30 years. His fields of scientific expertise are multi phase flow and solid interfaces.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kind has industrial background in chemical industry and is teaching process engineering at University Karlsruhe (TH) since more then ten years. His fields of scientific expertise are process and product design. He focuses on particulate processes like crystallization and precipitation.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johann Stichlmair has industrial background in process engineering and was teaching process engineering at University Essen and at Technical University Munich for about 30 years. His fields of scientific expertise are process synthesis and apparatus design in thermal process engineering.

Phase equilibria .- Basics of single and multi-phase flow.- Accounting, heat and mass transfer.- Distillation, rectification, absorption.- Extraction.- Evaporation, condensation.-Crystallization.- .- adsorption.- Drying.- Conceptual process design.

From the reviews:

"This book claims to cover 'fundamental knowledge' in the area of separation technology. ... readers who already have the fundamental knowledge and seek additional, more specific information in this area will find the book to be quite valuable. ... it would be useful for professionals or researchers and faculty. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above." (H. Giesche, Choice, Vol. 49 (7), March, 2012)
