Initially Published in 1980 as the Designer's Guide to Text Type, the first edition of this book won design awards from the Art Director's Club, the Type Director's Club, the National Composition Association and Printing Industries of America. Now published in an enlarged and revised edition, it continues as the ultimate typographic space relationship tool. Desktop publishers, users of PostScript(TM) page description language, graphic designers, art directors, editors, students, and production managers will find this visual aid indispensable for examining the effect of line space on text type. Entirely reset in PostScript language fonts, it offers type users ninety-six popular text typefaces with leaded showings in sizes 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 point. Complete alphabets in roman, italic, bold, and bold italic are included with all size showings. Sample showings are set solid and with 1, 2, and 3 point leading to allow comparisons of legibility, readability, character, and general composition of the different type styles. 1,920 blocks of text set to a 20 pica measure offer substantial sample settings for book, magazine, and advertising purposes, and provide an invaluable guide to all users of type.

JEAN CALLAN KING, a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, has worked as a book designer, graphic artist, and illustrator for twenty-five years, and has taught design and book production at Parsons School of Design. Co-author with Tony Esposito of PostScript(TM) Typeface Library, (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1993) she currently continues both her graphic design work and also designs residential interiors. TONY ESPOSITO owns The Graphic Discipline, a graphic design company on Long Island and is the Director of Communications at Cardinal Communications Group, Inc., in New York City. Tony has more than thirty years experience in the graphic arts industry, and has worked for Ogilvy & Mather, NY, as Art Director, Director of Typography; and at Volk & Huxley, Inc. as Vice President, Director of Typography. He is the author of Merganthaler VIP Typeface Library (Van Nostrand Reinhold, in 1979) and The Cardinal Type Photo Display Manual (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1982). He is also a contributing author to the Direct Marketing Handbook by Edward L. Nash (McGraw-Hill, 1984) and co-author, with Jean Callan King, of PostScript(TM) Typeface Library (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1993).
