'He after honor hunts, I after love. He leaves his friends to dignify them more, I leave myself, my friends and all, for love.' - "Proteus", Act 1, Scene 1. 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' is a delightful early work from a Shakespeare on the verge of brilliance, a rarely performed play that showcases the developing talents of perhaps the greatest literary voice that ever lived. Taking as its plot the venerable theme of the love triangle and its attendant complications, "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" was Shakespeare's first attempt at romantic comedy, a genre the author was later to master in "Twelfth Night". Read by a talented cast that includes Peter Wyngarde and Edward De Souza, this Howard Sackler production captures all the youthful whimsy, lyricism, and the already-profound grasp of human emotions which characterise early Shakespeare and which makes "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" a must for scholars and beginners alike.
