The cut verse, ci and sanqu are the three categories of the Chinese metric verse; this anthology includes three hundred verses, one hundred for each of the three categories. The verses are based on Chinese culture in general, and the author’s personal life in particular. All the verses are written in Chinese, but all have English translations, in some cases with notes. The anthology is designed for readers interested in the Chinese verse, or Chinese culture at large, for those who are engaged in Chinese studies, and for Chinese courses, symposiums and libraries.

Yongsheng Cheng is a professor of English at Anhui University of Science and Technology, China. He earned an MA with honors at Canterbury University, New Zealand. Academically, he specializes in translation theory and practice, English writing, Chinese regular verse, ci and sanqu composition and English translation. Up to now, he has published 15 works, including 3 monographs concerned with translation theories, 2 coursebooks about translation from Chinese into English and vice versa, 3 poetry anthologies including a cut verse translation of Stray Birds, and a Chinese translation of an English work of fiction. In addition, he has also published more than 40 research papers, including 28 on translation research and 8 on Chinese regular verse composition and translation.
