With its engaging characters, imaginative world-building, and humor, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure and the possibilities of co-created stories.
On a beautiful island full of magical creatures, one bunny is destined for an impossible quest. The rare Seither water that provides magic to everyone has been stolen. To make matters worse, the loyal Spartans who were guarding the Seither have gone missing. Someone must find the missing force and the Spartan guards. But who? Following an ancient prophecy, the Viking King Hareld gives the mission to the most reluctant hero: His nephew, Hoplite, the humble farmer. Assisted by a group of colorful, hilarious, and sometimes-dangerous allies, Hoplite must complete a journey across the kingdom to find the missing magical water and the Spartans before it's too late. To succeed, Hoplite must lose everything-including his lonely, peaceful life as a lettuce farmer, and become something he never thought possible: a powerful Spartan. With mesmerizing details and unforgettable characters, The Battle Bunnies and the Unlikely Spartan is a rewarding first volume in the transcendent community-created fantasy series.

CHAPTER 2
FLIGHT OF THE VALKYRIE
Hoplite and Sizemore scaled the Snowflake foothills. It was their tenth day of travel and they were growing weary in the cold. Lucky for both of them, just before they left Imaginük Falls, Queen Christakins had used her Valkyrie magic to cast a warmth shield that would protect them from the cold. How long it would last, they didn’t know.
Hoplite was too scared to sleep in the dark, so they had traveled by night and rested by daylight.
“We should find a place to rest again, your Highness,” Sizemore said. “The sun is rising, we’ll be safe now.”
“How many days does it normally take the Water Guard to make its journey to every bunny faction?”
“Fourteen days, sir. But they have their transport dragons to assist them. And they dilly-dally with, ahem, certain supplementary activities that I’d prefer your uncle never learn about.”
“How long will all the factions’ Seither reserves last?”
“Reserves?” Sizemore said incredulously. “The only reserves in the entire kingdom are in your uncle’s castle and in that otter-skin mead bag around your back. At this point, we’ve been traveling for ten days ourselves. The different factions will start to wonder where their Seither is. If I had to guess, we have until the next new moon before it’s pandemonium across the land. That gives us 20 more nights.”
Hoplite looked back toward Imaginük Falls. Even with the new light of dawn, the castle was so far away he could barely make it out on the horizon.
“Never look back, Hoplite. Home will be there waiting for us. But only when we can return to it facing forward, not back. Let’s set up camp near these rocks then summit the mountains tomorrow. The Snowflake Village is just over this ridge.”
Hoplite turned around and continued trudging up the mountain. He’d never been so far from home in his entire life.
Without warning, something blue came flying past Hoplite’s head.
“What was that?” he said.
A female voice called out from an overlook above them: “Don’t take a single hop closer!”
Hoplite, in his naivete, said, “Can I take two?”
“Sure! Two arrows for two hops.”
The arrows whizzed past Sizemore and Hoplite, who had taken refuge behind a rock. Sizemore said, “Your diplomacy skills leave much to be desired, sir.” Then Sizemore called out to the voice above. “Are you a Valkyrie?”
“What’s it to ya?”
“We’re on official orders from King Hareld.”
“Ah, please forgive me! I should have given you my royal welcome!”
Sizemore nodded at Hoplite in satisfaction. His moment of smugness was interrupted by a fast barrage of a dozen icy blue arrows so sharp they stuck in the side of the rock.
“What do you want from us?” Sizemore yelled.
“I want you to give back the dragon eggs you stole!”
Another arrow.
“Wait!” Sizemore called out. “Wait. We didn’t take your dragon eggs.”
“Prove it!”
Sizemore looked around helplessly. “Well, um, we don’t have any dragon eggs. So if we stole some dragon eggs, we would have some dragon eggs!”
“Maybe it was you!”
“I just said it wasn’t.”
“No, maybe you hatched from one of the stolen eggs, and that lame Spartan you’re with was the mastermind.”
Hoplite said, “Do I look like the mastermind of anything?”
“Stand up and let me see for myself.”
Hoplite proudly stood up from behind the rock, but Sizemore pulled him down before the next barrage of arrows had whizzed past so closely one ricocheted off Hoplite’s helmet.
The Valkyrie laughed. “You two are dumber than I thought! What kind of fool’s errand are you on? Searching for some missing lettuce from the King’s garden?”
Hoplite looked at Sizemore in excitement at the lettuce comment. He got excited at any mention of the vegetable. Sizemore shook his head. “No, she’s not serious about the lettuce. She’s making fun of us.”
Sizemore called out. “We’re looking for the missing Seither from the Falls.”
“What do you mean? The new moon was last night. The Water Guard is delivering it soon.”
“I’m afraid not,” Sizemore said. He slowly stood up from behind the rock. No arrows.
The Valkyrie came to the edge of her overhang and dropped her bow by her side. She looked down at them. She was the first Valkyrie Hoplite had ever seen besides his aunt, the Queen. This was the most beautiful bunny he’d ever seen in his life.
“Do me a favor,” the Valkyrie said. “Grab those arrows and follow me.”
“Oh, you mean these arrows you tried to kill us with?” Sizemore said.
“Yes,” she said, and walked away from them up the slope.
“Can you believe this?” Sizemore said. “She shoots us and we have to clean up after her.” He plucked the arrows from the rock.
Hoplite looked up to the mysterious Valkyrie with open-mouthed awe. Despite her gruff demeanor, she still had that twinkle of snowy magic that he heard all Valkyries get when they’re in high altitude.
Sizemore didn’t notice the look on Hoplite’s face. “Imagine if she’d made contact with us. I dare say she would’ve made us clean up the pieces of our own lifeless bodies.”
By the look on Hoplite’s face, he would have gladly done whatever this Valkyrie told him to do.
She hopped fast up the mountain. They tried to keep up, even as they rose high above the tree line into the snow. Soon, they hopped over a final ledge and were suddenly in a new and beautiful world…
The Snowflake Valley.
Sharp, dramatic peaks surrounded them on all sides. The way the morning sun hit the snow made it look like they were in a valley full of diamonds. In the heart of this high-altitude valley was a quaint mountain village, bustling with the new activity of the day. Valkyries walked around looking busy, some carrying dragon eggs. This was the Valkyrie Village.
Hoplite noticed that their guide had a dragon as well. A lame-looking fellow with sleepy eyes. His wings were so weak that he flew through the air like he was bobbing in water. He dutifully and wordlessly grabbed the arrows from Sizemore and placed them gently in the Valkyrie’s quiver.
“We don’t suppose you know of a proper inn where we might get some rest,” Sizemore said apprehensively.
“Ms. Firefly is the innkeeper and leader of all Valkyries in the Snowflake Valley, ever since Queen Christakins left to marry the King. She will take care of you.”
“Thank you, that’s very kind,” Sizemore said.
“Quite the adventurers you two are,” she said with a sneer. “You start all your journeys with a nap?”
“We traveled through the night,” Hoplite said defensively.
“I’m sure you did, good Spartan.”
Many Valkyries gave Hoplite and Sizemore the stink eye in the village. Some Valkyries even clutched their dragon eggs closer and wrapped their crystalline wings around the precious eggs as they walked past.
You see, every dragon in the kingdom came from the Snowflake Valley. It was the Valkyries’ duty to protect the eggs, hatch them, and keep the dragons small. Otherwise, the dragons would become large and unruly, like they were before King Hareld’s reign. But that’s a story for another time…
“Quite the chilly reception for a King’s caravan,” Sizemore said.
“You’ll have to forgive them for not bowing at your feet, dragon. We’re quite on edge. Somebody has stolen dragon eggs. And the other Valkyries don’t know you two well enough to realize you couldn’t steal an arrow shot to the helmet, let alone a dragon egg.”
“Somebody took dragon eggs,” Sizemore repeated in disbelief. “How is that possible?”
“I don’t know. They must have been using some powerful dark magic to get past our defenses.”
“Shamans?” Sizemore hypothesized.
“That’s what I was thinking.”
“Maybe whoever stole your dragon eggs is the same bunny that stole the Seither,” Hoplite said.
The Valkyrie stopped in her tracks. “Somebody stole the Seither?”
Sizemore nodded. “On the new moon.”
The Valkyrie’s eyes narrowed. Always quick to action, she said, “Come, make haste. We must see Ms. Firefly immediately.”
They hopped quickly to keep up with the Valkyrie, who was gliding ahead of them. Eventually they reached the Firefly Inn, which looked cozy with its wooden exterior and creaking front door.
A Valkyrie at the front desk said, “Good day,...
