Mary Fortune (circa 1833 – circa 1910) was a pioneering figure in the world of literature, particularly known for her contributions to the mystery and detective genres. Born in Ireland and later emigrating to Australia, Fortune's personal life remains somewhat of a mystery, mirroring the enigmatic qualities of the fiction she crafted. Writing under multiple pseudonyms, including Waif Wander and W.W., Fortune authored a substantial body of work, including the significant novel 'Hereditary'. Her narratives often featured crime and detective elements, making her one of the first women writers to delve into these themes.
