Charles Anderson Dana (1819–1897) was an American journalist, editor, and senior government official, best recognized for his intellect and influential role during the Civil War era. Born in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, Dana attended Harvard but was forced to leave due to health issues. He then engaged in utopian socialist experiments at Brook Farm, subsequently turning to journalism which became his lifetime pursuit.
