George Manville Fenn (1831–1909) was an English writer and educator whose literary career spanned a prolific period from the 19th century well into the early years of the 20th century. Fenn was born on January 3, 1831, in Pimlico, London, and began his working life as a teacher before turning to journalism and fiction writing. His foray into literature produced a substantial oeuvre that included over a hundred novels and numerous short stories, often characterized by adventure themes aimed at young adult and juvenile audiences. Among his array of works, 'By Birth a Lady' stands as an exemplar of his skill in producing gripping narratives for an adult readership. Fenn's literary style often involved complex plots and a strong emphasis on moral values which was typical of the Victorian era in which he wrote. His stories, though mostly forgotten today, were once widely read and provided education and entertainment to a generation of readers who found pleasure and inspiration in his tales of valor and virtue. Fenn possessed a talent for creating engaging characters that embodied the dialects and social conditions of his time, an attribute that has garnered him study from literary historians interested in Victorian literature and its impact on British culture.
