Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was an illustrious Italian writer, poet, correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist. Boccaccio was born in Certaldo or in Florence, the precise location remains unclear, to a Florentine merchant and his mistress.
