Tanglewood a romantic historical novel, is the name of a pre-Civil War plantation. Its main characters all rise from this mysteriously powerful land. The major theme of this family saga is Freedom. Readers may find their own concepts of an unrestricted life challenged as the players seek that precious freedom in their own ways. Throughout the pages, six pairs of lovers will rip through popular notions of black-white love against the backdrop of the reality of slavery. Tanglewood was inspired by the narratives transcribed by the writers during the Depression. Survivors of slavery still living during those years were interviewed and shared their stories for posterity and very appreciative historians.

Shirley Petro-Timura is a writer of fiction and poetry. She has served as a public-school teacher for 30 years. Tanglewood is her first novel.

The Kentucky slave trade is in its darkest days. Cassius is a young virile black man does not want to die like so many others in the other plantations. Tanglewood offered him a safe home. But now he must flee from this haven after he violently avenges the death of his best friend. Now he must flee with his pregnant wife, his son and father onto the Underground Railroad. He runs to escape the hangman's rope and cruel bounty hunters. His wife gives birth in a cave on a cold wintry day, making their travels even more difficult. A safe house on the trail hides another traveler. It is his ex-lover and mother of his son. Cassius is forced to decide for whom he is willing to fight. Cassius is torn between desire and fidelity and the pull of freedom. He recalls that they are very much alike. He also remembers her kiss but forgets she can betray.
