In the age of simulated realities, poetry allows you to bring words to life. Have you ever pictured your thoughts lasting forever? Have you ever thought when I write I AM free? We became in agreement that our talent worked cohesively together and gave birth to a masterpiece. Pleasures: Love, Sex, and Poetic Stories is a collection of poems and poetic short stories by DeJuan Cuffee and Sharon Evans that explore themes of love, lust, relationships, passion, and longing. The authors adeptly showcase their talents with wordplay soaked in hip-hop inspired lyrical eroticism, as well as through their intergalactic expressions, and often straight forward language. There are beautiful illustrations provided throughout the book that complement several poems providing vivid color and expressionism. Delicacies include masterfully crafted flows that address the highs and lows of love through tales of high adventure or through clever, confessional back and forth banters. There are sultry sexual escapades, humorous one-liners, and emotional sagas for the readers (both couples and singles) to enjoy. The authors, while effortlessly balancing and blending their voices, in the process ended up forming their own poetic language, and we are all the better for it.

The Love Letter

Living the high life with the love of my life,

It was on this day 8 years ago

That she became my wife,

A couple of kids, and several homes later,

We were accumulating serious paper,

In good health and sound mind,

But it was around this time,

When things got dramatic,

There I was searching for old music in the attic,

And what I came across proved tragic,

It was a letter,

Addressed to my dear old spouse,

A love letter no doubt,

Apparently, a response

To something she had sent out,

Reading it was like ripping my heart out,

This joker was talking about cumming in her mouth,

Wanting to make her his spouse,

How she has the best pussy ever,

How my dumb ass would never catch her,

Here I was, the bud of a few jokes,

I read how she’d gloat,

About buying him my favorite sport coats,

And some of the same colognes,

All I could picture in my dome,

Was her moaning from them boning,

Getting angrier by the moment,

Still reading the despicable details,

The letter was five excruciating pages

That hit me like a barbell,

She’s been fucking some dark male,

(Apparently, a Morris Chestnut looking mutha-fucker)

For going on 6 months,

I felt like a dunce,

I never suspected once,

The nerve of that cunt,

I mean, I thought I was enough,

We had sex,

But they had sex,

And apparently a lot of other stuff,

Who knew she liked it rough,

According to her I was too plain and basic,

The safe choice,

And while screwing me,

She’d picture him naked,

Realizing things would never be the same,

I skipped to the end of the letter

Just to get a name,

Some punk mutha-fucker named Clyde,

I resumed reading,

And he’s talking about making her his bride,

Never thought the woman of my dreams

Would be one to scheme…

I remember the day we fell in love,

As we traveled to a land of bliss,

He was my very first love,

Always at the top of the list,

We obtained so many things in our name,

Properties and estates,

My life was making sense now,

And I felt no regrets or mistakes,

We made love on crystal lakes,

Orgasms no longer fake,

Elegant dates using our tongues as ice skates,

To form the figure eight,

I knew he would be forever by my side,

Then one day I was feeling down

After an argument filled with pride,

In the office walks this guy,

A 6-foot brother named Clyde,

I tried to shift my eyes,

The supervisor informed us

This was the new IT guy…

We all said “Hi,”

He smiled at me,

And I seductively smiled back,

I lost track…

Of the number of days

Before lust sessions manifested,

He walked in that day and I was his prey,

He huffed and puffed and blew my clothes away,

As we fucked passionately on my desk,

We intertwined so close and deep

I became his suit and he was my dress…

Immediately I felt regret,

The next day that I came in

There was a love letter on my desk,

I looked at it for ten whole minutes,

Before putting it in my bag,

Reflected on that night

It was the best sex I ever had,

I managed to make it through that day

Without being seduced by him,

As I tried ignoring his perfect face,

His beard was neatly trimmed,

I rushed from the office and headed home,

Stopped and bought my hubby’s favorite cologne,

And who the fuck did I see,

It was Clyde in the parking lot,

And said he needed to talk to me,

He told me he had searched his whole life

For an intelligent and sexy woman to be his wife,

And he wanted me to be his bride…

I hated myself that moment

For feeling butterflies,

All the way home all I did was cry.

I made love to my husband to make me feel better,

But I could not let go thinking of that love letter,

I kept it in a secret place at our house,

I wanted to keep that reminder,

I thought my husband would never find out…

I await my cheating wife

(Who knew she was even the cheating type)

With letter in hand,

And thoughts sinking like quicksand,

Thought about leaving my ring on the nightstand,

(So dramatic)

Calm down, relax, wait on the couch,

(Then let her have it),

30 minutes later, the door opens,

She’s all “Honey, I’m home,”

But I remain focused,

Too pissed to respond,

Earlier, I dropped the kids off with my Mom,

My wife sees my face,

And is like, “What’s wrong?”

I respond, “Charlene, how could you?”

As soon as I asked it,

Her face dropped with sadness,

It was as if she was reading my mind,

But she waited, gave me time

To get the words out of my mouth,

This time, I felt the need to shout,

“How could you fuck some clown nigga named Clyde?”

(Thinking to myself inside)

This is a bruise to my heart, ego, and pride,

“Not only have you been cheating,”

“But you lied,”

“Those times when I couldn’t get a hold of you,”

“You were sucking this man’s dick!”

“What about our family, man, shit!”

I never called a woman a “Bitch,”

Until now,

She said she could explain,

And that I needed to sit down,

I was overdosing on anger,

All I could picture was this dude banging her,

(I could hang her),

And other irrational thoughts came in,

And out of my head,

I started tearing up about all the good times we had,

And thinking about our kids, the house(s),

And everything we’ve built together,

Gone, gone forever,

I can’t possibly stay with Charlene

After this bullshit,

She is crying, saying she is sorry,

Shit was played out like Atari,

Fell on death ears,

Without trust,

Why the fuck are we even here,

“Oh God, why, why did you do this woman?”

“Damn, I love you so much,”

“We could’ve talked about this, fuck!”

A wall I punch,

Made sure to motion away from her,

So that she wasn’t touched,

I would never strike her,

No matter how much I disliked her,

But now,

She feels like a stranger to me,

It sounds crazy,

But I told her to leave,

And let me be angry in peace…

I never will forget that day

That exposure occurred in my life,

I cheated on the perfect man,

And became an unfaithful wife,

I tried to plead my case,

Told him that letter was two years old,

The way he looked at me,

You would think he had no soul,

He calmly said, “Pack your shit,”

“And not one item you better forget,”

As he walked away,

I knew at that moment that...
