Listen in as the first Western monk to live on Mt. Athos wrestles with historical differences between Christianity's East and West, learns the Orthodox practice of "the prayer of the heart," and explores a monastic republic like no other place on earth.
Pennington was the first Western monk to stay on Mount Athos for more than the usual overnight visit. THE MONKS OF MOUNT ATHOS is the journal of his extraordinary sojourn there.

Listen in as Pennington wrestles with theological differences between Christianity's East and West, learns the Orthodox practice of 'the prayer of the heart' and explores the landscape the monastic communities and the food of Athos - a monastic republic like no other place on earth.

This 25th anniversary edition of his stay (originally published in 1978 with the title O HOLY MOUNTAIN!) is complete with new material reflecting on the ecumenical openness fostered as a result of and since Pennington's stay there.

Father M. Basil Pennington, OCSO, was a monk for more than fifty years. He lived at St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts and was the author of many modern spiritual classics, including Lectio Divina; Centering Prayer.
