'Marvellous.' Daily Mail'A stunning achievement.' Sunday Times, BOOK OF THE MONTH'A gripping novel with a difference.'Psychologies'Immersive and immensely powerful.'Guardian'A haunting read but a quite brilliant one.' Independent i'Intense, brutal and glittering, a call to listen to the voices of the ignored.'ObserverThe dancer. The mother. The cop. The artist. The wife. These women live by countless unspoken rules. How to dress; who to trust; which streets are safe and which are not. The rules grow out of a kaleidoscope of fear, anguish, power, loss and hope. Maybe it is only these rules which keep them alive. When their neighbourhood is rocked by two murders, the careful existence these women have built for themselves begins to crumble. 'Pochoda turns grief, suffering and loss into art, crafting a literary thriller that is no less compelling for its deep emotional resonance.' VogueWhat readers are saying:'Gritty and addicting.''The kind of storytelling you hope to find in your movie theaters one day.''Pochoda weaves a mystery that not only had me turning the page, but dwelling on lines of prose.''This book was far from what I was expecting it to be . . . I couldn't tear myself away.''I devoured it in one sitting . . . I LOVED IT.''This is one of those books that tears into you and doesn't let you go - even after you read the last page.'
A crime novel of unusual depth and freshness...
Fantastic. It's the kind of novel that makes you jealous as a writer, euphoric as a reader, and desperate for more.
Intricate, deeply felt, beautifully written.
Pochoda stuns with this disquieting literary thriller rife with descriptive street language and violence. It is complex, intense, and enthralling.
Pochoda turns grief, suffering and loss into art, crafting a literary thriller that is no less compelling for its deep emotional resonance.
Probes whom we listen to and why, and whose voices are deemed worthy of being heard.
Pochoda's unconventional crime novel probes whom we listen to and why, and whose voices are deemed worthy of being heard.
Ivy Pochoda's magic is in her empathy. The current generation of women crime fiction authors, true crime podcast hosts, and journalists challenging our views on victims is giving me life, and Pochoda grabs this by the reins and takes us on a ride in this gut-wrenching masterpiece.
Ivy Pochoda is the empath of the overlooked . . . While serial killers dehumanize their victims, and true crime reportage reduces them to before and after photographs, here Pochoda restores their humanity, giving these women identities beyond their relationship to the killer, like a crime fiction Bechdel.
The perfect summer read . . . Pochoda's ingeniously structured white-knuckler is concerned with upending assumptions; these pages dare us to interrogate what we believe, especially when it comes to who does or doesn't deserve our sympathy.
Not only has Pochoda written an immersive, intriguing murder mystery - she's also crafted a framework with which we can examine how all women are viewed in Western cultures.
I can promise you will not easily forget the women in this book. This is Ivy Pochoda at the height of her power - to slip inside the psyche of women at the margins; to, with a conjurer's flair, capture the voices of multiple characters with pitch perfect grace; and to craft a bendy, surprising, page-turning tale. It's brilliantly plotted and beautifully written.
Absolutely superb, a painful, atmospheric novel about women living on the margins in LA. Sex workers, drug addicts, women viewed and treated with contempt and disregard ... It's a stunner.
Heartbreaking ... This deep dive into the lives of women too often unseen in the shadows makes them vividly unforgettable.
Pochoda turns the serial killer genre on its head by refocusing attention on the women affected-women who witness, investigate, fear, suffer, and resist.
