In a career which has seen him hailed as the best soccer player of his generation and condemned him as a drunken lout, he has made and lost over three million pounds, been declared bankrupt, slept with more beautiful women than he can remember, failed to make his marriage work, been incapacitated with drink, had his skull split open, been dragged into court, arrested - and jailed. And only four years ago Manchester United, anxious to recapture the unique charisma that Best brought to soccer, seriously invited "Yesterday's Hero" to come out of retirement and play for them again.
