P G Wodehouse was born in Guildford in 1881. He was a prolific writer who, in Jeeves and Wooster, created two of the most popular characters of the 20th Century. He was created a Knight of the British Empire in 1975 and said in a BBC interview that he had no ambitions left now that he had been knighted and there was waxwork of him in Madame Tussauds. He died that same year, aged 93, on St Valentine's Day.
