Unscrambled Breggsit grapples with the Brexit phenomenon dominating British politics ever since the 2016 EU Referendum. From his humorous North British perspective, the author sees Brexit as an opportunity to take a fresh look at what it means to be Scottish, English, Welsh or Northern Irish, or just plain British - if such a thing really exists.
Unscrambled Breggsit wants to add something new to the Brexit discussion in the UK by looking at the subject from a North British point of view. It seeks to offer the average man and woman on the street a bit more on Brexit than the cheap soundbites British politicians - be they intelligent or not - and the British media are churning out. The author makes it abundantly clear that 'Brexit means much more than just Brexit'. This is taken up right at the outset in Chapter 1, Brexit Meanz. This chapter serves as a little appetiser, playing with the old mantra 'Brexit means Brexit', and setting the humorous tone of the book's 10 chapters by way of a little game of Countdown, a 'Starter for 10'. Chapter 2, Brexit Rules, then gets down to the serious business of trying to define what Great Britain is, and looks at the differences between countries, nations, states and regions. Chapter 3, Brexit or Leave It, deals with the BU, the British Union, how it works and how it compares to the EU, the European Union, and what will be lost when the BU leaves the EU. Chapter 4, The Daily Exbrexit, examines the role the British media plays in the Brexit debate and the influence newspapers, TV and radio have on the nation's psyche in general. Chapter 5, U Brexit U Fixit, tackles the subject of the break-up of the Union, a move initiated by the South British, North Britain (and Northern Ireland) voting overwhelmingly to remain part of the EU. Chapter 6, Workers' Tea Brexit, takes up the business of work and business (or lack of it) in the UK, and the effect that leaving the EU will have on the economy. Chapter 7, Brexit Jam, argues that, because the South British government has no real plan for Brexit, the whole country is now stuck in a real jam, threatening to create even more JAMs (people who are Just About Managing). Chapter 8, Tyrannosaurus Brexit, covers the polarised situation resulting from the 52/48 Leave/Remain split at the referendum, and the often unreasonable, confrontational and even tyrannical elements that surface whenever the subject of Brexit comes up. Chapter 9, Brexit Tears, contains the famous Open Letter To Youth. This is an optimistic chapter rooted in the belief that our real hope for the future lies with our young people, most of whom want to remain part of the EU. They are the ones who will be shedding Brexit Tears if the whole Brexit affair goes belly-up. Finally, Chapter 10, Post-Truth Brexit, focuses on so-called post-truth politics and all the fake news that goes with it. According to the author, the post-truth factor has always been there - it's just another word for 'propaganda' which governments and mainstream media outlets have always been very good at. His answer to post-truth politics? - believe his version of the truth, not theirs!
