Formerly Homiletics Professor in Atlanta’s Interdenominational Theological Center (1980-1988), Dr. Clingan is now retired. He has been an interim ministry specialist, guest preacher and orator, freelance consultant, and scholar. Dr. Clingan was born in Spadra, Arkansas, and raised in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
“Ralph Garlin Clingan’s research deserves broader exposure.”
—Scott Holland, Assistant Professor of Peace Studies and Cross Cultural Studies, Bethany Theological Seminary (Richmond, Indiana), and Contributing Editor, «Cross Currents Magazine: The Journal of the Association of Religion and Intellectual Life»
“I enjoy using Ralph Garlin Clingan’s work in teaching my courses and workshops.”
—Melva Wilson Costen, Professor of Liturgical Studies Emeritus, The Interdenominational Theological Center (Atlanta, Georgia), and Contributing Editor, «The Journal of the Interdenominational Theological Center»
“Clayton Powell’s career as activist pastor (1908–1937) of the nation’s largest black church, Abyssinian Baptist in New York City, is well documented. «Against Cheap Grace in a World Come of Age», however, focuses on Powell’s theological formation and preaching. For the first time, Powell’s formative influence on the young Dietrich Bonhoeffer is discussed in detail. Ralph Garlin Clingan is a passionate and evocative scholar.”
—Kenneth Rowe, Professor of Church History, Drew University School (Madison, New Jersey), and Archives Librarian, The United Methodist Church
“I only wish I had possessed Dr. Clingan’s work when I wrote my book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer.”
—Josiah Ulysses Young, III, Associate Professor of Theology, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.
