Recently republished in four handsome volumes and now available as a set, ""Nga Moteatea: The Songs"" is a classic collection of annotated waiata made by distinguished Maori leader and scholar Apirana Ngata. The first three volumes were previously published with English translations by Pei Te Hurinui Jones; the waiata in Part Four were newly translated by Hirini Moko Mead for the 2007 edition.These completely redesigned and reset editions, published in association with the Polynesian Society, preserve the integrity of the original text and commentary, but the typography has been modernised by the inclusion of macrons. The volumes also include CDs of waiata drawn from the Archive of Maori and Pacific Music at The University of Auckland. These are essential texts for anyone studying Maori culture and important volumes for every New Zealand library.

SIR APIRANA NGATA (Ngati Porou, 1874-1950) was the leading Maori figure of his day, a land reformer, politician and scholar. He made a vital contribution to the revival of the Maori race in the early twentieth century. PEI TE HURINUI JONES (1898-1976) was an outstanding scholar who published extensively in both Maori and English. HIRINI MOKO MEAD (Ngati Awa) was foundation professor of Maori Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, instrumental in establishing Te Whare Wananga o Awanui-a-rangi at Whakatane and chief negotiator for the Ngati Awa claim. He is the author of many books and lives in Wellington. The new editions are edited for the Polynesian Society by Jenifer Curnow and Jane McRae.
