It traces musical and cultural trends engendered by the blues and the aspects of the music industry and of American society that helped to nurture those trends. The blues is a uniquely American form, and thus the majority of the individuals discussed are American; however, as many entries will address, the blues has grown far beyond its regional origins to become a form of entertainment and self-expression for all races, classes, and nationalities.
