This work explores the emergence of the United States as a major force in the international art world during the twentieth century. This wonderful series (with over 14 titles produced) aims to combine a compact, commercial approach with the breadth and clarity of larger format books. Covering art which both creates the foundation of modern culture and modern art itself, the books include Picasso, Bauhaus, and the Art Nouveau movement.

Virginia M. Mecklenburg is curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She has organised more than 20 exhibitions, including ‘Edward Hopper: The Watercolours’. Other projects include directing the interactive video American Abstraction, 1930–1945, which received the American Film and Video Association’s Blue Ribbon Award. She has published on the art of George Bellows, Frederick Carl Frieseke, Robert Indiana and early American Modernists.
