Bodies of literature on transnationalism, globalisation, cultures of migration and mobilities address the interplay between cultural change and continuity, suggesting the importance of analysing the circulation and diffusion of cultural practices. However, the analysis of the ways in which cultural practices are reproduced, appropriated and re-created through their circulation and fixity has not been explicitly developed.
This book explores ways of making and experiencing music across geographically dispersed communities of practitioners. It examines the circulation of cultural practices across networks of relationships and the friction produced through various forms of mobility. It empirically investigates the processes whereby culture is simultaneously stabilised and transformed in and through mobility.
This book is the first ethnographic work to address explicitly the continuity and transformation of a musical practice through the analysis of multiple forms of mobility and fixity.
