To achieve social and environmental sustainability, the performing arts' modes of production are in urgent need of significant transformation, as global crises have dramatically shown. The contributors to this volume challenge the predominant notions of professionalization that have underpinned theatre training practices and discuss the role of producers and arts managers towards changing problematic paradigms of authorship and leadership. They examine how regimes of artistic creation, production and management intersect in the field of theatre, dance and performance - and turn their attention to alternative ways of collective organization.

Fernando Matos Oliveira is an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, Portugal. He is the programme director of the PhD in Artistic Studies and the director of Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente. In that joint capacity, he has been supporting creative work within the university environment, and running the »Practice as Research« programme since 2012, aimed at supporting doctoral projects with practical and experimental components in the field of the arts.

Vânia Rodrigues, born in 1979, worked as an arts manager and consultant for several cultural organizations before transitioning to a research career. With a PhD in artistic studies from the University of Coimbra and an MA in cultural policy and management from the City University of London, she is currently principal researcher of the R&D project GREENARTS. Her research is focused on alternative management and collaboration practices in the performing arts regarding fair practices, creative producing and ecology and sustainability.
