I was sent on another mission to my division headquarters, this time I was not sure why. What I did know though, is that I wanted to get out of the infantry company. I soon learned that the troop information and division newspaper beckoned me. The non-commissioned officer in charge decided that I wrote well enough to join his staff. With the end of the fighting imminent, he needed writers and wanted someone with front line experience. I became a cub reporter and later an "e;Official U.S. Army Correspondent"e;. Meeting with, and writing the stories of returning POWs, created in me a sense of attachment which would become a part of my story telling. I began to reading Ernie Pyle and Ernest Hemingway voraciously. I found my passion.
