A new collection of essays, reviews, and other pieces, some previously unpublished.
"Jazz In Its Time" is a new collection of essays by Martin Williams, the distinguished jazz critic and author of "Jazz Heritage". The book includes an important section on prominent musicians - including popular jazz pianists and such major artists as Eric Dolphy and the World Saxophone Quartet - and on the contrasts between jazz and rock and the difficulties of fusing the two. There is a fine study of musicians at work, both at recording sessions and in jazz clubs, and summations of significant recordings by such figures as Count Basie, Red Allen, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillepsie, Thelonius Monk, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and Ornette Colman. Concluding with an unusual section on jazz scholarship and criticism and the academic world, the book will be essential reading for all serious jazz enthusiasts.

About the Author Martin Williams has written and edited a number of books on jazz; his articles have appeared in such places as Harper's, Saturday Review, The New York Times, High Fidelity, Stereo Review, Down Beat, and Metronome.
