Film makers were beginning to look for other means to widen the appeal of the moving image, including employing lecturers to accompany the shows and filming newsworthy events. Queen Victoria s Diamond Jubilee procession through London was one of the first of these events. Almost every major and minor film producer in England covered it. These types of films can be seen as the forerunners of the newsreels of the 1920s and 1930s.Barnes was awarded the Jean Mitry Prize for a life-long contribution to film in 1998.
