In his seminal book The Grammar of Ornament, architect Owen Jones laid out his design theories for decorative art and included examples like this taken from mosaics at Pompeii and in the Museum at Naples. The aim of the book was to show off the best decorative art across different cultures, and so featured a variety of patterns seen across Europe and the Middle East.
