The author has had a long career both as a writer on jazz and as a successful record producer. This book collects a wide range of writings, including interviews, biographical sketches, record sleeve notes, and essays about jazz.
For four decades, Keepnews has thrived as both a critic and a jazz record producer. Starting as a young traditionalist, he has become one of the leading forces in modern jazz, and "The View From Within" is a superb culmination of his collective experience in this area. Early interviews and commentary for "The Record Changer"; biographical sketches of Jelly Roll Morton, Art Tatum, and Charlie Parker; album notes (including two Grammy winners); essays and booklets - all are combined with warmth and enthusiasm to provide jazz fans the world over with a feast of material.
