This sumptuous volume showcases the pioneering work of Italian artist Alberto Burri.
Published to coincide with the major retrospective at New York's Guggenheim - the first for more than 35 years and the most comprehensive ever mounted - this sumptuous volume showcases the pioneering work of Italian artist Alberto Burri (1915-1995). Exploring the beauty and complexity of Burri's process-based projects, this work positions the artist as a pivotal protagonist of post-WWII art. Burri is best known for his series of Sacchi (sacks) made of stitched and patched remnants of torn burlap bags, often combined with fragments of discarded clothing. Also included and covered in some depth, are his less well-known series: Catrami (tars), Muffe (moulds), Gobbi (hunchbacks), Bianchi (whites), Legni (wood), Ferri (irons), Combustioni plastiche (plastic combustions), plus others. Published in collaboration with the Fondazione Burri di Citta di Castello, Burri presents the artist's entire production, with 250 illustrations.

Giuliano Serafini is one of the foremost specialists in the work of Alberto Burri. As art critic, he has collaborated for years with the review Art e Dossier. In addition to Burri, he has written on Kiefer, Matisse, Elisabeth Chaplin, Goya, Cezanne, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, Pistoletto, Marino Marini, Beuys, Carra, Tsoclis, Bagnoli, Klasen, and Art Nouveau. In recent years he has taken special interest in contemporary Greek art.
