Am 7. April 2015 feiert die Musikwelt den 100. Geburtstag von Billie Holiday, der wichtigsten Jazz-Sängerin ihrer Zeit und einer der außergewöhnlichsten Stimmen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ihr kurzes Leben war tragisch - von Drogenmissbrauch bis zu Gefängnisaufenthalten - aber " Lady Day", wie sie ihr Freund und Saxofonist Lester " Prez" Young nannte, hinterließ einen reichhaltigen Katalog brillanter Aufnahmen. Ihre Stimme, ihre ausgezeichnete Phrasierung und ihre außen harte, innen zarte Persönlichkeit haben Stars wie Janis Joplin, Diana Ross und Erykah Badu beeinflusst, und außerdem fast jede Jazzsängerin, die nach ihr kam. Aufgenommen in die "Rock' n' Roll Hall of Fame" und "The Grammy Hall of Fame", gibt es zahlreiche Tribute an " Lady Day" von u.a. Sam Cooke oder Carmen McRae bis zu aktuellen Veröffentlichungen von Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rebecca Ferguson, José James, oder Cassandra Wilson. Billie Holiday wurde in der "Swing Ära" berühmt und begann ihre Karriere mit Bandleadern wie Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, Artie Shaw und anderen, bevor sie Alben unter eigenem Namen aufnahm. Dieses 10-CD-Set präsentiert alle fünfzehn Originalalben, die sie zu Lebzeiten veröffentlicht hat, inklusive "Lady Sings The Blues" aus dem Jahr 1954 (in dem auch ihre gleichnamige Autobiographie erschien), "Lady in Satin" und das seltene Album "Bilie and Stan" mit dem Saxofonisten Stan Getz. Diese umfangreiche Sammlung enthält alle Songs, die sie berühmt gemacht haben, u.a. "Strange Fruit", "God Bless The Child", "Lover, Where Can You Be", "(In My) Solitude" oder "Body and Soul". Vielleicht die beste Art und Weise zu zeigen, warum Billie Holiday noch heute, 56 Jahre nach ihrem Tod, eine Legende ist.
