I was first introduced to this larger than life character back in 1979, albeit through a projector onto the silver screen, Quadrophenia, the film that launched a 1000 faces. 18 years later, I would finally meet this totally outrageous person who became one of my closest friends, lush, side kick, partner in crime and mentalist. A man who would have a huge impact on my life, from sharing a gay Ted Baker tent in Brighton and keeping the whole campsite awake, singing at the tops of our voices in west end bars, TV interviews, book launches, film premiers, marathon drinking sessions and crazy weekend parties that Keith Moon would have been proud of! A man who has worked with the cream of fine actors and rock royalty. A man that can instantly lift you out of your gloom and have you in fits of laughter with his life stories, a man with extra ordinary talent-actor, presenter, songwriter, composer, compere, musician, non-conformist, life contributor, annoying jingle creator and dog lover. Basically, a man that you want to be your friend. Inside the covers of this book lies the true stories from behind the scenes of the life of this man. Ladies and gentleman, I give you Mr Gary Shail.
Gary Shail began work in TV and film in 1977 and is best known for his roles as Spider in the 1979 cult classic filmQuadrophenia[1] and as Steve, the punky teenager in The Metal Mickey TV Show. Shail appeared in the 1980 series The Further Adventures of Oliver Twist[2] and also played Oscar Drill in Shock Treatment[3] the 1981 follow-up to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and as Guy Raines in the 1983 BBC productionJohnny Jarvis. He wrote the original songs and theme music for this production, for which he received a nomination for the Ivor Novello Awards. In 1988, Shail appeared as the evil pimp Billy White in the TV mini-series of Jack the Ripper, starring Michael Caine. He has also made appearances in the TV series The Bill and in Casualty and The Professionals. In 1995 Shail began working with music production company Natural Sound Source in London, producing music for television, film and advertising. In 2004 he produced the Arabic fusion album Infinity in Dubai. In 2010 Shail was back in the recording studio working on his autobiographical self-penned album 'Daze Like This.' A collection of new songs interspersed with some re-workings of some 'Johnny Jarvis' themes. The album received critical success, but failed to reach a wider audience mainly due to Shails reluctance to embrace the new 'download' generation.
