On the auspicious hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Taos Society of Artists, photographer Barbara Sparks has compiled a compelling insider’s collection of works taken over her years as a visitor and resident of one of New Mexico’s most magical places.

The book captures the truly breathtaking diversity of the land from its dramatic rift to the beloved mountains said to hold the spirits of the ancients, to the churches and the Pueblo, and to the people—the Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos—who live in harmony, working the land, creating art, and keeping the stories of their vast heritage alive.

Taos: People, Land, Spirit is the follow-up to photographer Barbara Sparks’s last book, Far Flung Places: The Photography of Barbara Sparks. She has collaborated on three other books: Aspen: Blazon of the High Country with Ann Zwinger; Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains with Tom Wolf; and Spanish Peaks: Land and Legends with Conger Beasley Jr. Her work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions and added to the permanent collections of the Harwood Museum, Millicent Rogers Museum, Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University, USA, Sangre de Cristo Art Center, and Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. She has received prestigious art awards and is the recipient of two grants from the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities. She splits her time between homes in Colorado Springs and Taos, New Mexico, USA.
