This work takes the reader on a journey around 19 major islands or island groups surrounding Ireland's coast. It highlights their history, their houses, their lifestyle, their legends and what makes each one distinct.
The islands of Ireland are scattered like jewels around the Emerald Isle, and this book celebrates them in all their rough-hewn beauty and diversity. While it is said there are as many islands around the coast of Ireland as there are days of the year, 'Ireland's Islands' considers 19 major islands, or island groups - from around the entire coastline - in terms of their most significant characteristics. These could be their history, the legends surrounding them, their areas of outstanding natural beauty, their flora and fauna, their towns and villages, or - in the majority of cases - combinations of all of these.

Peter Somerville-Large, author of the best-selling 'Irish Country Houses', writes with verve and accuracy on the history, customs, ancient remains, and legends of some of Ireland's most fascinating sea islands. Having spent much of his boyhood on a small island in the Kenmare River, his first-hand knowledge of the realities of island living brings an authentic flavour to his texts. No stranger to Irish themes, he has written 'Legendary Ireland', 'Irish Eccentrics' and 'Literary Ireland', as well as numerous articles on travel in Ireland and around the world. His 'Irish Voices', a social history of Ireland during the early years of this century, was published by Chatto & Windus in 1999. He lives in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny.
