This guide reveals why something makes a good subject and what to look for in your surroundings. It aims to provide amateur artists with a combination of practical instruction and a number of illustrated projects and step-by-step demonstrations in watercolour, oils and acrylics.
"What shall I paint?" might seem a strange question to ask when there are around us so many obvious subjects to paint. However, painters sometimes become aware that their choice of subject does not always readily make a good painting. This book reveals why something makes a good subject and what to look for in your surroundings. Hazel Soan believes that painting starts with seeing, and in this book she shows readers how to develop their observational skills and become more aware of the elements that make up a good picture, enabling them to discover and recognize painting subjects all around them, often in the least obvious places. With a combination of practical instruction and a number of illustrated projects and step-by-step demonstrations in watercolour, oils and acrylics, "What Shall I Paint?" aims to ensure that artists need never be at a loss for inspiration, or think any subject inappropriate or uninteresting to paint. It draws attention to the enormous number of painting possibilities in everyday life, at work, at home, while travelling and on holiday.

Hazel Soan is a well-known professional painter, and the author of Collins Watercolour Flower Painting Workshop and Learn to Paint Vibrant Watercolours. She has made several instructional art videos, two television series on painting for Anglia TV and Channel 4, and is currently one of the art experts on the very popular TV series, Watercolour Challenge. She travels widely in the course of her painting and divides her time between London and Cape Town.
