Millionaires' playground, summer escape, artists' retreat and one of New Zealand's most celebrated wine-growing regions - Waiheke Island, in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, has the lot. New Zealand media personality John Hawkesby became a resident in 2001 and can't imagine living anywhere else. In Waiheke, he shares the island's seductive charm and eccentric character, while photographer Duncan Innes captures the stunning vistas and unique seaside atmosphere that draw visitors from far and wide, as well as some of the diverse personalities who call this special spot home.

Auckland-born former broadcaster John Hawkesby has lived on Waiheke Island since 2001. The father of three and grandfather of nine (plus two delightful extras from his daughter's second marriage) splits his time between freelance writing for a variety of publications, emceeing events, making after dinner speeches and trying to expand his limited culinary experience. John has authored two books, Save The Last Dance For Me (1997) and Vintage- A Wine Journey (2006). He shares his Waiheke home with his wife, Joyce, a black Labrador called Georgie and copious rabbits that play havoc in his tiny vineyard.
