In this fifth collection of embroidery, Helen M. Stevens captures the diversity of nature from the polar caps to the tropics through flora, fauna, birds and insects. She shows how even fantasy worlds can come vividly to life by using the embroiderer's imagination and inspiration in exciting ways
By drawing on inspiration from different countries and cultures around the world, Helen brings fresh vibrancy to her work. In Helen M Stevens' World of Embroidery she captures the diversity of nature from the polar caps to the tropics through flora, fauna, birds and insects. Beautiful colourful photographs highlight the skill that translates the iridescent glow of a hummingbird, the flash of a tiger's eye, the light as it glints on a sea otter's fur or reflects the movement of surrounding water. Helen shows how even fantasy worlds can come vividly to life by using the embroiderer's imagination and inspiration in exciting ways. Helen's own workbook sketches reveal a fascinating insight into how such ideas translate onto fabric and encourage the modern embroiderer to blend traditional techniques with modern high-tech materials, blending filaments and special effects as well as traditional fibres, real gold and silver, and materials gathered from nature itself.

Helen M. Stevens is a talented embroidery artist whose pictures are now held in collections all over the world. The Embroiderer's Countryside, The Embroiderer's Country Album, The Timeless Art of Embroidery, and The Myth and Magic of Embroidery, along with her latest 'Masterclass' series have ensured a dedicated following both at home and abroad. Helen is a member of the Society of Women Artists, only the third textile artist to be so honoured, and in 1990 received a commission from the House of Commons, which remains the only textile piece ever to have become part of the Palace of Westminster Collection. Helen is a writer and broadcaster and her embroidery was featured in the British Museum's Anglo-Saxon Art exhibition 1991-2. Helen lives in Suffolk.
