Ray traces his first jazz photos to the early 1950s. Many of his early photographs document the birth of West Coast jazz and the artists who defined this period. Ray and his cameras have been in attendance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Nice Jazz Festival, during production of The Stars of Jazz television series, and all of the Los Angeles Jazz Festivals. His photographs have appeared on LP covers, and more recently, on a large number of CD covers. In 1997 he received the 'Milt Hinton Award' as photographer of the year.
