A poignant, inspirational story about love, loss and how to be brave.
If you want to try new things, you have to be brave, but you can’t be brave without also being scared.
While Jennie grew up wanting to please other people, Abram followed his heart from an early age. The two couldn't have been more different, and yet when they met Jennie fell in love with Abram's fearlessness.
But when life takes a turn for the worst and Abram is no longer by Jennie's side, will she find her own courage?
This poignant and heart-felt picture book explores themes of love, grief and believing in yourself in a gentle and uplifting way. With a contemporary setting, relatable characters, vibrant artwork and biographical text, this book is great for inspiring little ones and starting important conversations.
At just 31, Jennie faced profound loss when her husband, acclaimed jazz trumpeter Abram Wilson, passed away suddenly in 2012. She poured her grief into founding a music charity in his honor, raising £1 million over 11 years and inspiring over 10,000 young creatives through its programmes. Her heartwarming children's book Becoming Brave shares how she found courage after this tragedy. Though never planning to write for kids, Jennie has a special ability, helping children explore their emotions through drama and storytelling. Jennie now works as a coach, mentor and creative educator. This is Jennie's first children's book. Tomekah's delicately hand-crafted illustrations have featured in newspapers, food packaging, pottery, classrooms, books and digital campaigns across the US, UK & Europe. Her work is constructed from early memories and love for Afrofuturist themes expressed through a blend of colourful and textural layers. Her handmade process continually fuels a bold style creating unique pieces that sit somewhere between a print, collage and a painting.
