The maths strand of STEM — where we see it, how we use it and why you should care.
Discover how maths is part of our daily lives with Everyday STEM Maths – Maths In Action.
Mathematics is everywhere you look and is used in everyday situations. From gaming and banking to life-saving medication and climate change predictions, maths is the building block of everything! Discover how maths can help you decide where to go on holiday, uncover the maths behind the fastest vehicles on the road, and meet the inspirational mathematicians who brought numbers and symbols to life, including Alan Turing, Emmy Noether and Barby Canright.
A 'try this at home' section shows readers how to measure a building with just a pencil and create their own card game.
With easy-to-understand text written by maths expert Lou Abercrombie, and lots of colourful artworks, photos and diagrams, readers can best explore where we encounter maths and why it’s even important at all.
The Everyday STEM series makes science relevant to tweens. Instead of telling kids STEM is important and is the key to their future success, these books show readers how we use science, technology, engineering and maths in our everyday lives. While the topics sound high-level and complex, this series makes these concepts age-appropriate and accessible. So, while we can’t promise to teach 9 to 11-year-olds quantum physics, we can explain in the simplest terms the practical applications of STEM.

Lou Abercrombie left Durham University with a First Class Maths degree before getting a job in television, where she worked first as an Audio Engineer and then as a Post Production Manager. She is the author of Fig Swims the World, which is inspired by her love of wild swimming. Evelyn Rogers is a CA based illustrator and comics artist. Inspired by graphic novels, classic children’s books, superhero comics, and fantasy novels, they began drawing at a young age. They love to create wildly bright and interesting illustrations and emotional, colorful comics and sometimes they even dabble in animation. When they aren’t drawing, they can be found performing on stage, sewing a new costume, or baking up a storm in the kitchen
