Although only in existence for 51 years (1867-1918), the Austro-Hungarian Empire has played a momentous part in European and world history. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian nationalist sparked off World War I - and the history of Balkan nationalism in a region then dubbed "the powder keg of Europe".
