A collection of William Falconer's poetry. After an account of Falconer's life and reputation, the study concentrates on Falconer's masterwork, "The Shipwreck". The parallel text format facilitates line-by-line comparison of the editions and shows the progress of Falconer's development as a poet.
This collection of essays, chosen by the Philip Hamburger from his 60 years of writing for The New Yorker, chronicles not only the people of US political life (Judge Learned Hand, Fiorello La Guardia, Dean Acheson, FDR, Eisenhower, Reagan, Clinton) but also the places and events, with special emphasis on presidential inaugurations (the author has attended, he thinks, 14). Here is one man's view, both funny and serious, of the glorious diversity of American politics - and of the better angels of our nature.

Falconer's life; Falconer's reputation; "The Shipwreck" - composition and publication - didacticism - terms of art; "The Shipwreck" as epic; the poems; "The Shipwreck" (a chart of the ship's path, cantos, occasional elegy); minor poems - "Frederick Prince of Wales", "Ode on the Duke of York", "The Demagogue", "Demagogue B", "A Sea Chaplain's Petition", "Description of a ninety gun ship", "The fond lover", "An address to his mistress", "The mishipman"; "The Shipwreck" commentary; minor poems commentary.
