This open access book explores the history of how banks and banking serviceshave become part of everyday life. Taking welfare state Sweden as its setting, thebook identifies key cultural challenges and shows how banks and financecompanies made inroads into the workplace, the family, spaces of consumptionand the world of social movements while also taking on tasks typically associatedwith state authorities. Focusing on this 'bankification of everyday life' reveals thehistorical links between the post-war welfare state and the financialised everydayculture of the late twentieth century. Orsi Husz is a Professor of the History of Science and Ideas at Uppsala University, Sweden. Her publications have explored areas of the cultural history of everyday economic life in the twentieth century such as mass consumer culture, popular investment, consumer credit, household budgets, use of banking services and financial identification practices.
