A shortened version of "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" especially aimed at students of grammar in colleges and universities, drawing on linguistic research and including coverage of the differences between written and spoken English and between British and American English.
This volume is a shortened version of "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language". Although the structure of the parent volume has been preserved so that reference to it can easily be made, this grammar has been especially written to take into account the needs of advanced students of grammar in colleges and universities. The book draws on linguistic research, not only in the field of syntax, but also in areas such as semantics, pragmatics, text linguistics and discourse analysis. Special attention is given to differences between written and spoken English, as well as between British and American English.

The English language; a general framework; verbs and auxiliaries; the semantics of the verb phrase; nouns and determiners; pronouns; adjectives and adverbs; the semantics and grammar of adverbials; prepositions and prepositional phrases; the simple sentence; sentence types and discourse functions; pro-forms and ellipsis; co-ordination; the complex sentence; syntactic and semantic functions of subordinate clauses; complementation of verbs and adjectives; the noun phrase; theme, focus and information processing; from sentences to text.
