Bill Haley shook the musical world with his songs when the term rock & roll did not yet officially exist. With "Rock Around The Clock" in 1954, he not only sang the anthem of this new music genre, but also the best-selling rock song of all time to this day. Bill Haley And His Comets were the most successful rock & roll band in the world for half a decade.
He was also the first to bring this new music across the ocean to Europe, on record, on film and live. His hotly anticipated two-month European tour in 1958 caused a sensation in countries like Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Italy, etc. The worldwide headlines about the riots, made the touring business with this music almost come to a standstill for years. Only with the Beatles, who were also Bill Haley fans, things got better again. Even in later decades, there were hardly any concerts where hundreds of police, water cannons and tear gas bombs were used. Despite the opposition of the parents' generation, the establishment and politics, Bill Haley paved the way for this music, which today is an integral part of pop culture.
The book traces in detail, on the basis of the Bill Haley European tour in 1958, what life was like "on the road" in the early years of rock music and how the post-war youth, often considered hoodlums, tried to break free from the constraints of society and parents and how their awkward reactions fueled the whole thing.
In addition to hundreds of mostly unpublished photos and documents, contemporary witnesses and musicians also have their say. One chapter is devoted extensively to the ambivalent relationship between Bill Haley and Elvis, who began as an unnamed musician in Haley's support act, only to eventually knock him off his throne.

Klaus Kettner, born on February 8, 1965 in Munich, Germany had his musical awakening when, at the age of 11, his father took him to the movies to watch Bill Haley's film Rock Around The Clock. Infected by the rock & roll virus, he plunged deeper and deeper into the music of the 1950s. Inspired by his traveling throughout Europe to attend rock & roll events, and collecting old records, he decided to start his own record label to make rare old recordings available to collectors. 1985 saw the foundation of Hydra Records, which is still active today. To promote his releases, he started organizing concerts and tours with original artists and young rockabilly bands under the name Rock It Concerts. The list of artists he has worked with reads like a "Who's Who" of the Rock & Roll and Rockabilly scene. He also organized the legendary Munich Rock & Roll and Rockabilly Meeting for 19 years. In between he wrote the liner notes for many LP and CD releases and worked for trade magazines like Stack A Records, Rocking Fifties, Rock & Roll Musik Magazin, American Music Magazin,..... in 1991 he met Bill Haley's reunited original band "The Comets", taking over the management and booking in European for 27 years including several hundred shows. In 1995 he also started a similar profitable collaboration with Rockabilly Queen Wanda Jackson, which lasted 24 years until her retirement. In addition to a sizable Rock & Roll collection, he now owns one of the most extensive Bill Haley collections worldwide, and has gained an intimate insight into the Comets' cosmos through his contacts with Bill Haley's musicians, friends and family. Apart from his own productions for Hydra Records, he has been involved in productions for other companies such as Bear Family, Rundell, Ace,..... In 2007 he opened the unique Bill Haley Museum – regarded worldwide as the place to go for Bill Haley fans (which is regrettably now closed, owing to demolition of the building). He supports and organizes exhibition on Bill Haley at various locations such as the Kunstmühle Rechberghausen, Rathaus Wolframs-Eschenbach, Deutsches-Hygiene-Museum Dresden, Ruhr Museum Essen,...
