In the wake of the Enlightenment, a number of theological and philosophical positions emerged that challenged Christian orthodoxy. The espousal of universalism by William Vidler, one-time Baptist pastor, was felt to be influential enough by Andrew Fuller that he sought to refute it in a series of letters that he brought together in an 1802 publication. This volume provides a critical introduction to both Vidler's theological position and Fuller's response to it. Also included is a critical edition of and introduction to Fuller's debate with his fellow Particular Baptist Abraham Booth, for whom Fuller had a huge measure of admiration. Their debate over the nature of the atonement had ongoing reverberations in the transatlantic Baptist and evangelical world throughout the nineteenth century.
