An international team of scholars chart the history of sexuality in Europe and focus on the commonalities and differences between the countries. European sexual cultures were widely diverse as a result of religious divides, different legal systems and economic patterns. Aimed at undergraduates in the History of Sexuality and the 20th century.
This volume brings together studies of the sexual cultures of all the major European countries, including France, Germany, Russia, Italy, Spain, Britain and the Netherlands, to focus on the commonalities and differences between them. European sexual cultures were widely diverse, partly as a result of the great religious divides, Catholic, Protestant, Islamic and Orthodox, different legal systems and different economic patterns. However, there were some strands of common experience; the reaction to the Enlightenment, the Western influence on the South and East, the hybridization of populations, and sexual fantasy and tourism.

National overviews: sexual cultures in Great Britain - some persisting themes, Lesley A. Hall; religion and sexual culture in Ireland, Tony Fahey; the Netherlands - neither prudish nor hedonistic, Harry Oosterhuis; sex and sexuality in France since 1800, Robert A. Nye; Italy - sexuality, morality and public authority - metaphors and interventionalism, Bruno P.F. Wanrooij; sexual cultures in Germany and Austria, 1700-2000, Franz X. Eder; Spain - the political and social context of sex reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Richard M. Cleminson and Efigenio Amezua; sexuality and politics in Russia (1700-2000), Igor S. Kon. Sexual science and sex reform: medical science and the modernization of sexuality, Harry Oosterhuis; the world league for sexual reform - some possible approaches, Ralf Dose.
