This is a guide to structure-based writing designed to explain why we use the language the way that we do. Rather than a set of inviolable rules, the grammatical norms of English are portrayed more accurately as a way to produce more effective writing. The text and exercises are engaging, and should be considered appropriate for native English speakers as well as intermediate non-native speakers, and beyond. This will be relevant to learners globally, in English speaking and non-English speaking environments, given the high level of penetration of the language in every field.

Matthew McGuire has taught English both as a second language within the United States and a foreign language in other countries. He co-authored the book Phrasal Verbs for English Language Learners and published articles related to pedagogy in various journals.Owen G. Mordaunt, PhD teaches linguistics, TESOL, and Black short fiction at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, USA and was Director of TESOL Certificates for many years. He has co-authored a book, Phrasal Verbs for English Language Learners, and published articles in various anthologies and international journals (humanities & social science, language, linguistics, literature, educational research), including the following: African History, Culture and Social Policy; Civil Strife in a Complex and Changing World; Academic Voices; Black Lives; Educational Studies; Language, Culture and Curriculum; Afrika Focus; TESOL Journal; and TESOL Reporter.
