Elizabeth Ellen Writer of Women's Spirituality, Feminist Theology, healing and recovery I was born in a small, seaside town where I was surrounded by nature and the sea. I have been a spiritual seeker for many years, walked many paths and learnt from many spiritual teachers. I have drawn from traditions including Wicca, Buddhism, contemplative Christianity and Eco and feminist theology. After several years living in England and Germany were I visited many sacred sites, I have now come back to Australia. I have studied spiritual philosophy, including Anthroposophy, religion and psychology. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and Women's Studies, an honours degree in music composition and a Master of Divinity. In our times, right now, we are presiding over the total destruction of the human soul. It is not only Nature that is disintegrating, it is the human being. Leaving aside arguments pertaining to comparing differing cultural time periods, our time is seeing a new form of what I will be calling evil. This evil as such is a force, so often part of the archetypal unconscious in the human mind. I call this the evil that is the culprit. Our Anthocene era, that is being demonstrated by the scientifically confirmed phenomena of climate change, also contains the dramatic dislocation of all that can be seen as to be human and good, for humanities cultural and spiritual wellbeing. All that is good in the soul of the archetype of our humanity. The face that is infiltrating and affecting is subtle, persuasive and absolute. Rudolf Steiner had the spiritual courage and insight to perceive and articulate this malevolent force in the human being. This book is an attempt to use the concepts of Anthroposophy in a fully contemporary way, to further define, clarify and understand these destructive social and personal psycho-pathologies. It is a presumption of this book that readers have a knowledge of Anthroposophy. Readers should be encouraged to explore the basic books by Rudolf Steiner as a grounding for a full understanding of this book.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION, DEFINITIONS OF THE EVIL IN OUR TIME, THE TIME SPIRIT OF THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES, FOCAULT'S GENEALOGY AND RUDOLF STEINER'S ANTHROPOSOPHY, THE CONSCIOUSNESS SOUL AND KARMA


 

Anthroposophy, is a utopian vision of the evolving individual human being resplendent with a world experienced self knowledge, standing objectively and consciously within the known and unknown cosmos, containing all the realities expressed of heaven and earth. Rudolf Steiner speaks with such certainty for the essential good within each human being, ever careful not to impinge on his or her ever present and sacred freedom. He therefore speaks of the bad in human beings very softly, almost inaudibly in keeping with the immense trust he instills in our human culture and the free individual working within it.

 

This book is about the bad or evil that is present in our twenty-first century human life. Steiner claims in his future projections of the likely outcome of our humanity, that a division will slowly arise whereas those people who begin to develop spiritually and work in the world with compassion and love will form one part of humanity and those that resist this path will form the other. These two different streams of humanity will for long periods of time exist together in the human community on earth, with the spiritually developed people seeking to heal the inherent materialism and subsequent karmic consequences of the other.1

 

From a spiritual point of view, this division of humanity based on spiritual development will be chosen by the individuals. In these future times, Steiner describes that,

"others will be living who have turned into a path leading towards evil. These backwards souls will have burdened their karma with so much error, ugliness and ill-doing as to constitute a special group on their own."2

 

And further that, "a human soul ... a human individual will only be under the necessity of incarnating in such a form if he himself has given rise to the conditions for it."3

It is now time to heed the call of Steiner whose profound cosmic philosophy, whose aim is a world imbued with love,who speaks with such clarity and understanding of the human condition. I believe it is time to speak truely, clearly and openly about the forces that work powerfully within the psyches of human beings. When these forces are acted out into our world, they affect such damage that the individuals being inflicted are shattered and damaged to the extent of losing directions of their destiny because of the actions of the powerful and deluded few. Those of us that love the earth and the human and non-human world, need to confront face to face with these challenges. We cannot walk away, vowing to persist in some vague and super-idealistic mood of positivity or perhaps consider that all evil will eventually come to good someday. We have come to an important place in the biography of this earth and our human life upon it.

 

My intention of this book is to define and articulate this new manifestation of evil in the twenty-first century. Further, this book is about what acts as evil through human beings. seeing it as a phenomena of the human soul. My premise is that the spiritual core of the human being is always essentially, spiritual and therefore good. Evil, with its combinations of each evil beings, influence and seeks to destroy the healthy functioning of the soul through damage to this inner spiritual part, the ego. This is a complex phenomena and involves the ego's engagement with others in the social realm. The soul is the place of the meeting with others. This is human interaction with another within and through the soul links cosmic and human action. It creates the world in which we live through the emergence of being and beings within the extended socially situated self. This situated self influences the wider social sphere. In this space, some higher spiritual beings are hinderances to humanities spiritual growth and act to destroy the spiritual ego in the human being. The purpose of these beings is to constrain and create illusionary perceptions and understandings within the soul effectively making individual actions essentially, unfree. They are not free actions because they do not come from the innermost spiritual goodness of the person. These actions when played out into the social world has the consequence of hindering others and creating harm. They further compromise the resolution of our personal karma with each other, which Steiner claims is the central task of our present cultural epoch.

 

It is on the level of being, the incarnation of opposing forces into the soul that is the focus in this book. They work in a very obtuse way, working into the soul and affecting the incarnation of the ego and its workings. They infiltrate the thinking first being imbued within certain materialistic worldview that operate on the level of groups and ideologies. They use social control to eliminate other ideologies and alternative perspectives of the world. The targeting of Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy is well known and began in his lifetime. Steiner himself spoke about the enemies of Anthroposophy. Other writers have clearly delineated this view, identifying the main protagonists and reinforced and explained their workings in our society.4 These forces find ever new populations and ideological cliques that are counter to their aims. Their methods are draconian using laws to exclude people of alternative philosophies from active cultural interaction. They hinder their inclusion in higher education and politics. With the capacity for full surveillance in our society now they can easily target individuals of diverse views as mentally unstable and even psychotic. People can be profiles with ease and put under surveillance as to their cultural connectivity with alternative views. There is an understanding within these powerful elites that Rudolf Steiner was himself psychotic. These alternative people are viewed as needing psychiatric treatment and are dangerous to the community. This might seem extreme, but the powerful uses the narratives of a free democracy to tell people that they have freedom of thought, movement and life. They attempt to silence those who critique and criticism the system, silencing dissent. Within the powerful elites, actors are encouraged to "buy in" to these interventions for the good of a stable society seeing the alternative views and diverse ideologies as harmful. This is the world of ideological conformity and enforced through full surveillance.5 The laws around freedom of expression, thought and free association are ignored and are not seen to be contravened because these powerful elites work unseen in society.

 

They work most powerfully on the level of being through their ideologies in the political, health and religious institutions. This happens from the thinking with works deeply into the bodily constitution and the functioning of the ego. As Rudolf Steiner has described these ideologies are powers that effect the soul and enter the soul. 6 They can be hidden from conscious awareness who will perceive something totally different in his behaviour. The being will obstruct the bearer of understanding the influence attributing it to other factors in his thinking and feeling. This obscuration of the being is its chief modus operandi to take over the will of the person and use it for its own aims. Awareness and self regulation is the main defensive weapon against the take over of the soul. This is on the level of being. Person-centred psychology with its focus on self can be elevated to a spiritual practice in these moments and as a prophylactic against evil.

 

The ego in the soul organisation is inherently unstable in our current soul constitution. The immersion of beings in the soul is a process of the beings of Ahriman with Lucifer providing influence by giving a wide visa of illusionary self perceptions. This presents the soul with no ability to see, obscuring the activity of the Ahrimanic being. This beings are merely preparing the soul for a total breakdown of process and the vacation of any possibility of the healthy incarnation of the person's ego. The beings of the Asuras then step in to complete the process of soul evacuation and a take over on the level of being.

 

The aim of the opposing forces in the form of being is to eliminate the possibility of any healthy integration of the ego in the soul and therefore preventing any Christ forces from entering on any level. Any meeting with the force of Christ is eliminated. The Christ force in the soul gives the person the ability to freedom of thought and will and to consciously perceive the soul processes on the level of being - to identify the being in its quality and intentions. The soul's Christic initiatory development enhances this ability to see clearly and perceive the truth when experiencing the processes of the spiritual world. The soul is the instrument for this purpose.7

 

I hope that through awareness of this predicted human calamity, we can be part of turning away and hindering this tidal wave of destruction for human inner life on earth.

 

Anthroposophy now works as an active and vital movement throughout the world and is not a restricted knowledge within the cult of the Anthroposophical institutions.
